Planning a trip to the Amazon and want to reach Iquitos (Peru) from Leticia (Colombia) by boat?
Here's a full guide based on real experiences — helpful for adventurers, visitors to an Amazon jungle lodge, and lovers of nature.
This journey along the Amazon River may seem straightforward, but it requires proper preparation. Whether you’re traveling through the Amazon rainforest, staying at a lodge in the Amazon, or simply curious about another side of Colombian Amazonia, this guide is for you.
Immigration Procedures: Colombia and Peru
If you're flying into Leticia, your first step is to go to the immigration office to get your Colombian exit stamp. Doing this in advance avoids last-minute stress when boarding the boat.
Once in Santa Rosa, the small Peruvian village across the river from Leticia, head to the Peruvian immigration office (in the center of the island) to get your entry stamp into Peru.
Where to Buy Fast Boat Tickets to Iquitos
Tickets are sold in Tabatinga (Brazil), right next to Leticia. A travel agency (findable on Google Maps) sells tickets for about 150,000 COP per person. This is for the fast boat (e.g., Zoe boat).
💵 Payment is cash only in Brazilian territory. Bring exact change — they don’t give Colombian pesos back.
The trip from Leticia Airport to the agency takes around 15 minutes by car (or 1 hour walking). If you're staying at an Amazonia ecolodge, it's best to buy tickets ahead of time if possible.
Getting from Leticia to Santa Rosa
Head to the Leticia market, where small boats cross to Santa Rosa for 10,000 COP per person.
This crossing is essential for travelers continuing their journey to an eco Amazonia lodge or looking for an immersive experience in the Amazon jungle.
Boat Info: Schedule and Real Travel Time
The fast boat usually departs at 12 PM from Santa Rosa. Be there at least one hour before, around 11 AM. Although the official duration is 12 to 15 hours, some travelers reported that it took up to 22 hours.
🕓 Tip: Plan for delays if you have a flight or activity booked in Iquitos (like a night at an Amazon forest lodge).
What to Bring for the Boat Trip
- No meals are provided — bring food and water.
- Seating is basic — a cushion or towel adds comfort.
- Bring cash in Brazilian or Colombian currency — cards are not accepted.
- If you’re staying in an Amazonas Colombia hotel or ecolodge Colombia, ask if they can buy tickets for you.
